Who we are?

We are a coalition of students who believe accessible transit is important for Toronto’s future and we want an electrified modern system to serve our community and the environment.

Environment:

Diesel exhaust has negative impacts on the environment. Diesel exhaust emissions contain gases such as nitrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulphur dioxide. These gases contribute to lake and waterway acidification, as well as cause corrosion of buildings and reduced visibility.

Community:

To date, there is no evidence that diesel trains will decrease property values in the corridor. However, common sense suggests that these trains will negatively impact the community by creating noise and environmental pollution.

Health:

Diesel engine exhaust is a cancer -ausing carcinogenic. Several research studies have found an association between lung cancer deaths and outdoor air pollution. Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), sulphate particles and sulphur dioxide are probably of greatest concern.

Electrification:

With the Pan Am Games in 2015, the government needs to bring Toronto up to environmental global standards of electrification of trains. Electric vehicles are approximately four times more efficient than vehicles using internal combustion engines.
